PDU - GPM Power Driven Unwind
Doyen offers an important new upgrade option for the GPM Surgical Glove Walleting Machines: the GPM Power Driven Unwind (PDU). The PDU system ensures constant tension on the web as it comes off the roll. The PDU has already been installed on 15 machines with very positive results.

The PDU consists of a belt driven unit that mounts on the top of the existing unwind frame and drives against the circumference of the material roll, following it down as material is taken off and the diameter of the roll is reduced. The driving surface of the system is a medical grade laminated belt that rests against the mill roll. The weight of the drive causes the belt to partially wrap around the top surface of the material roll, giving it more surface for traction. The system is driven by a variable speed DC motor with a following type drive control. The drive control changes the speed and torque on the motor as the diameter and weight of the roll are reduced.

The PDU is controlled through the existing dancer roll assembly. The dancing system is modified to float more freely and includes high and low proximity switches that will stop the machine should a web break or a motor speed fault occur. A flag is installed on the roller to trip the proximity switches. Web tension is maintained through the use of a cam and proximity switch installed on one of the dancer rollers. As the cam oscillates in front of the switch, the motor speed is increased or decreased according to the position of the cam. The GPM existing pneumatic brake remains on the machine for braking the roll motion when the machine stops.

The benefits of the Power Driven Unwind system are:

Fewer adjustments - The operators will not be required to remove or replace weights on the dancer _weight bar as the roll diameter changes. This action is required on the existing GPM brake system in _order to maintain constant tension.
Better Web Control - The PDU does not start and stop like the pneumatic brake system. Once the _machine is running, the system speed varies from fast to slow and back again, depending on the _position of the dancer roll. This should minimize mis-folds and creasing caused by web tension _difficulties which will significantly reduce product waste.
Print Location - Because the web tension is maintained better with the PDU, movement of the printed _information on the inner wrap relative to the cut off knife is minimized. Thus, monitoring of the printing _and re phasing becomes less critical. This in turn will result in fewer glove misplacements and defective _packages.
Auxiliary Drive Roll for Hard Kraft Materials - The PDU will eliminate the need for the auxiliary pull roll _system when using hard Kraft inner wallet materials.
Better Solution - The Power Driven Unwind is a superior engineering solution for maintaining constant _tension on the material as it moves through the machine. It is more consistent, repeatable, reliable and _requires less maintenance.
The price to retrofit the Power Driven Unwind System to an existing GPM is $22,950. The price for the retrofit assumes that the dancing system on your machine is in good condition and is floating properly. The retrofit work will be done on site at your facility and can be expected to take from 2 to 3 days, depending on the age and condition of your GPM. The system can be retrofit to any model GPM for rolls up to 40" in diameter.

Delivery of the PDU can be made in 12 weeks. Our standard rate of $85 / hour will be charged for installation work. Local travel and expenses will be billed extra at cost. The installation cost could be significantly reduced if we retrofit a number of machines at one time and if your people assist us with the installation.
