Doyen has recently supplied a PD120/4SS combination machine to a confidential US customer for the converting and automatic packaging of delicate materials. The infeed on the machine was designed to accommodate a full range of packaging options including web over, where the base web carries the product into the machine for automatic linking to the converting process, and a pusher infeed for hand placement of the product for packing. When used with the PD120, the 4SS operated fully automatically without operator intervention. Importantly, given the expense of the products being packed, the pusher infeed allowed recycling of expensive components through the packaging process.

The standard PD120 pad cutting and placing system was modified to include dynamic web guides and had a folding station incorporated into the unit. These changes made it possible for the customer to fully automatically convert the dressing and place it into the pack without operator intervention. Like all Doyen machines, the process was inspected throughout and any reject products were rejected through the integral Doyen 4SS reject station.

The packaging process was specified to rotary seal Tyvek to Tyvek, and speeds of 8 metres per minute were reliably achieved on these difficult sealing materials - twice as fast as the customer's existing machines.
