CASE STUDY: Transdermal Patch Converting Solutions

transdermal patch converting machineA confidential German provider of pharmaceutical R&D and contract manufacturing with development focus on transdermal drug delivery systems. With a capacity of 160 million patches per year, they are the second largest manufacturer of transdermal patches in Europe.

The challenge

The company works with a number of renowned pharmaceutical companies and therefore requires a manufacturing system which is flexible enough to produce and package a variety of patches, without losing quality, production efficiency and product profitability.

Doyen's solution

Doyen devised a system which is adaptable to manufacture and package products in different shapes and sizes with  minimum downtime at changeover.
Doyen has cut financial losses incurred by waste of the active drug with a customised process which efficiently minimises ladder waste. Furthermore, automatic registration optimises the cut position, decreasing the number of patches rejected by the integrated quality control station.
The system uses Doyen's proven Transdermal Device Manufacturing and Four Side Seal Packaging technologies, converting up to 25 meters of PET/PE per minute. The transdermal patches are fed automatically onto Doyen's 4SS-400 four-side seal packaging machine to be hermetically sealed into peelable packs. An integrated quality control system detects and rejects splice, empty pouches and misplaced products.

Feedback

A member of the Process Development team sees the new machine as an important addition in the product development process: "Doyen has provided us with a production line that is flexible enough to run tests on a varied range of transdermal devices. We are very impressed with the versatility and efficiency of the machine.
"I am delighted to say that we have recently placed an order for a second machine."
