Case Study: DMS Dressing Converting System
A second dressing converting line for a confidential wound care manufacturer in Europe.
The Challenge
The customer was looking for manufacturing solution, that would ensure maximum productivity with high production outputs and reduced ladder waste. The system should make the production of several dressing sizes possible with minimum loss of time at product changeover.
Doyen's Solution
A full island dressing line with Doyen's award winning compensating head to reduce ladder waste on the island components. The machine cuts and assembles foam island pads onto a breathable film, and then automatically applies release layers prior to final cut. The compensating head of the island unit eliminates as much as 60% waste of the expensive foam island pad when compared to conventional dressing converting systems.
An integral parallel buffer festoon is incorporated into the design of the machine. This festoon is designed to have the unit disengage, which allows easy thread up and yet provides more than 20 metres buffer capacity. This capacity permits changing reels of the foam island pad without stopping the machine.
As with all Doyen units, tension control is maintained throughout the assembly operation, and differential servo controlled motors control the dressing tensions during construction, even in emergency stop conditions. Quality is checked throughout the machine operation and any suspect products automatically removed from the system. System defect is applied to ensure any single fault within the machine will be automatically detected and thereby ensure absolute reliability of the quality of the product emerging from the machine.
The machine produces a range of round corner dressing sizes from 50mm square up to 250mm square, with cassette tooling to allow quick changeover. The production speed of this unit is up to 120 dressings per minute, or 20 linear metres per minute, which is some four times the speed of the customer's current machine. Products are delivered fully completed and inspected from the system.
